Youth Leadership
Eleraffe University is a DLA program specifically designed for young people; offered to provide them a unique opportunity to learn and develop diversity management skills for application in their current and future leadership roles.

Program Participants
Program will target young adults between the ages of 18 and 20 years old who have graduated from high school and have completed their first year of college. A Selection Committee will review applications and select top candidates for enrollment into the program. The Selection Committee will use selection criteria that are designed to identify those young adults that have shown a proclivity for leadership and a recognition of the value of managing diversity. The candidates for the program will be solicited from all across the country through links with various scholarship programs, colleges and other educational or achievement programs. Those students selected will be granted a fellowship, which would cover all of their participation costs.

Program Length and Class Profile
Each year the program will be held during the summer months for a period of one week. Participants will live, study, network and learn together during that time. The first day and the last day will include arrival and departure activities. DLA will conduct one class per summer. The class size will average about 35 participants. Each Eleraffe class will have a diverse mixture of young people ranging in age from 18 to 20 years old and representing a broad spectrum of differences and similarities.

Program Design
Participants will be engaged in an experiential and state-of-the-art learning program that is designed to provide each participant with the tools and knowledge necessary to become “diversity mature” and “diversity capable.” The content for the educational program is derived from the diversity management framework developed by Dr. Roosevelt Thomas, Jr. and utilized in the highly successful DLA Community Leadership Fellows program.

Housing and Security
An Eleraffe team of educators, trainers and program administrators will facilitate and coordinate the program. Participants will be housed in a secure facility on one a college campuse or at a conference retreat location. The facility will be staffed with 24-hour onsite chaperones and program team leaders.

Post Class Networking Functions
Graduates from the program will be provided with opportunities to continue networking and connecting with their classmates and other Eleraffe alumni after they return home. Such programs may include online communications and a yearbook with pictures, names and addresses of alumni from the program.

Summary
The possibilities for a person that has acquired a capacity to effectively manage diversity are great. DLA seeks to impact the diversity management capabilities of future leaders by imparting these critical skills to those that have the greatest potential to drive change: our youth.
