While many approaches to diversity are limited to the concepts of representation and sensitivity to differences, DLA promotes a “mission-focused/requirements-driven” approach to managing diversity, helping leaders make quality decisions about diversity with a clear understanding of how those decisions relate to the mission of the organizations they lead. That approach is grounded in the theories and methods of Dr. R. Roosevelt Thomas Jr., who leads AIMD and is widely considered the nation's leading authority on diversity management.
Over its history, AIMD has developed innovative frameworks, processes and tools for maximizing individual and organizational potential through diversity management. One widely regarded tool is a breakthrough allegory developed by Dr. Thomas known as the Giraffe and Elephant fable. The fable establishes symbolic relationships between those traditionally in positions of power and authority and new entrants into the workforce that bring diversity to an organization. It sets up the critical questions that must be addressed with any diversity mixture and provides a powerful framework for productive dialogue on how to manage diversity mixtures and tensions to accomplish the organization's mission.
